«PET/CT diagnostics»

The most accurate method of oncological disease diagnosis is available in Latvia – method of combined positron-emission and computed tomography (PET/CT). These cancer treatment is provided in our medical centers in Latvia.

Most often PET/CT method is used during examinations of Hodgkin’s lymphoma and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, melanoma, sarcoma, colorectal cancer, lung cancer, breast cancer, uterus, ovarian cancer, oesophageal cancer, stomach cancer, pancreas cancer, thyroid cancer etc., as well as for cancer of an unknown location.

The essence of PET/CT method is that the patient gets injected with a harmless contrast substance (a radiopharmaceutical that “marks” cancer cells only), then followed by a computed tomography (CT), and then a positron-emission tomography (PET).

During the procedure patient is on the couch that gets pushed into the aperture of PET/CT device. Aperture is wide enough, but the tube is short, which avoids the feeling of being in a confined space, which is important in treating patients with claustrophobia. Patient is only required to lie still to be able to get quality images (up to 1600 images), that are optimal for the future analysis.

For more qualitative and diagnostically valuable results, a strict preparation for PET/CT is needed. You can get all the information by writing us on: , and also you will have to fill out our questionnaire.

The main advantage of this method is that it allows not only find the tumour, but also determine its exact dimensions (even in few mm), its structure, and also understand how healthy and cancer cells function in the body. With PET/CT you can accurately determine where the malignancy is, whether there are metastases and whether cancer has resumed after the treatment.

PET/CT is irreplaceable in assessing the effectiveness of the treatment and the choice of further tactics. For instance, the case with skin cancer – melanoma – treatment. A patient who has recently undergone surgery turned up, but their CT showed a relapse. One more surgery was scheduled, but, luckily, patient has addressed for another opinion. In Riga, he was thoroughly examined with PET/CT, because in case of progressive melanoma it is the right way of examination (while developing, melanoma can form metastases in the brain, lungs, liver, so finding them timely is very important). There were found various small metastases in patient’s lungs, which meant that the surgery cannot take place, because it was necessary to stop their spread in the body first! Doctors have developed a new treatment plan.

Wide medical research shows that after using PET/CT method, patient’s treatment plan changes in 30-40% of the cases. With PET/CT method it is possible to evaluate the effectiveness of radiation therapy and chemotherapy on early stages of treatment. This method of diagnostics allows to avoid the use of ineffective and expensive methods of treatment, making the treatment approach more individual for every patient.

Cancer treatment using virotherapy method

A unique therapy has been developed in Latvia – virotherapy. Treatment involves the use of only one drug, developed by Latvian professor Aina Muceniece - RIGVIR®.

Once a professor has faced a surprising situation. Woman, who suffered with breast cancer, was bitten by a dog. She got around 40 injections of rabies, and after that, there were no cancer cells found in her body! During a continued research, following goals were set: to choose a non-pathogenic virus (so it could not harm healthy cells) and teach a virus to “eat” cancer cells. It took scientists several decades, throughout which more than seven dozen different viruses and their effect on tumours were studied and tested.

Clinical research started in 1968, patients with stage IV cancer, where treatment with classical methods was ineffective, and a group of enterovirus ECHO, that was taken from intestines of healthy children up to 7 years old, were selected for testing. Tests were continued around the USSR. Only in 2002 RIGVIR has been registered in the Patent Office of the Republic of Latvia.

RIGVIR® is a living virus that finds and attacks only cancer-affected cells, so it is not dangerous to healthy human cells. After that, virus multiplies in damaged cells of tumour and destroys them. RIGVIR has two effects – it does not only destroy cancer cells, but also mobilizes patient’s immune system.

The medicine is based on the living culture – live enterovirus, non-pathogenic, not genetically modified, it does not contain antibiotics, narcotic or psychotropic substances, it does not reproduce in human organs, tissues or human’s blood and does not emerge in the environment.

RIGVIR® is effectively used in treatment of melanoma, skin and subcutaneous metastases of melanoma, and also is used in the treatment of uterine cancer, stomach cancer, colorectal cancer, pancreatic cancer, bladder cancer, prostate cancer, lung cancer, kidney cancer and several types of sarcoma: lymphosarcoma, angiosarcoma, reticulosarcoma, rhabdomyosarcoma.

At the moment RIGVIR® is fully funded for Latvian citizens with a diagnosis of melanoma and is included in clinical recommendations of skin cancer and melanoma treatment.

A drug RIGVIR® is released in the form of injections in a frozen shape, which is stored in the fridge with a temperature -20. When getting warm, virus “comes to life” and gets injected in patient’s blood. Therapy course depends on the type of tumour and severity of the disease. Scheme is developed individually together with a specialist, but typical schemes are following: injections three days in a row each month or one injection a week. There are almost no known side effects. As in any other vaccination, patient’s body temperature may rise a little.

Cancer treatment with a RIGVIR® drug is not an experimental treatment.
